Metabolic Support Challenges with Obesity during Critical Illness

Obesity has been described by numerous health organizations and societies as a disease.1 Over the past thirty years, there has been a global doubling in the rates of adult and childhood obesity and a tripling of the rate of adolescent obesity.1 Because of this epidemic2, one-fourth to one-third of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) in the United States are obese.3,4 It is a prevalent erroneous belief that nutrition therapy may not be necessary for patients with obesity due to their presence of caloric abundance.
