Barrett's esophagus: A comprehensive review for the internist
Barrett's esophagus (BE) is the condition in which metaplastic columnar epithelium replaces the normal stratified squamous epithelium of the distal esophagus. The process of intestinal metaplasia (IM) occurs in the setting of chronic esophageal injury from gastroesophageal reflux and is significant because it confers a predisposition to development of esophageal adenocarcinoma.
