Type 2 diabetes mellitus and pancreatic cancer risk. An independent etiological relation?

Objectives Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been consistently associated with an increased risk of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), but there are still some knowledge gaps about this association. For instance, T2DM seems to have a differing impact on PDAC risk depending on the duration of T2DM, which points to the existence of two T2DM subtypes in PDAC aetiology: new-onset T2DM and long-standing T2DM (LSD). The influence of diabetes-related medication on this association is also poorly understood.
