Descriptive analysis of patient outcomes following plasmapheresis for hypertriglyceridemia-induced acute pancreatitis

Objectives Therapeutic plasmapheresis is one of the treatment modalities for lowering triglycerides in acute pancreatitis secondary to hypertriglyceridemia. However, hypertriglyceridemia in the setting of acute pancreatitis is considered a weak indication for treatment given limited robust outcome data. In review of the literature, three case series have been reported over the last decade from single centers in Spain and the United States, with a total of 34 patients. We review the outcomes of plasmapheresis treatment for acute pancreatitis caused by hypertriglyceridemia in hospitalized patients.
