Pre-existing diabetes elevates risk of local and systemic complications in acute pancreatitis

Objectives Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an inflammatory condition which commonly requires hospitalization and shows increased incidence. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) has duplicated in the last 35 years. Acute pancreatitis may result in pancreatic exocrine insufficiency and DM, but nowadays the influence of pre-existing DM in AP patients represents a hot research topic. The aim of our meta-analyses is to understand the influence of DM on the outcomes of AP including mortality, length of hospitalization, incidence of organ failures and intensive care unit admission.
