Pre-operative cytologic diagnosis of pancreatic cystic lesions: Value of molecular analysis

Objectives Cystic lesions of the pancreas comprise a wide spectrum of entities, ranging from non neoplastic lesions to benign and malignant neoplasms. The management of pancreatic cystic lesions, especially when based on imaging alone, often presents a challenge. Cytological diagnostics are increasingly performed, but results can be inconclusive. Various mutations are associated with pancreatic cystic neoplasms, e.g. GNAS, KRAS and VHL mutations. Thus, molecular analysis of cytologic samples could improve pre-operative diagnostics.
