Pre-diagnostic erythrocyte cadmium, selenium, and zinc levels and pancreatic cancer risk in Europe
Objectives Cadmium (Cd) is a naturally occurring heavy metal that has no known biological function and is considered a Group 1 human carcinogen by IARC. Diet is considered the major source of exposure in the general non-smoking population. The increasing use of Cd-batteries is projected to increase environmental contamination. Cd body burden is twice as high in smokers as non-smokers, and interferes with essential elements such as zinc (Zn) and selenium (Se). Cd exposure in vivo induces pancreatic tumors in rats.
