Increased incidence of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) in patients with distal bile duct cancer and ampullary cancer vs. adenocarcinoma of the pancreas
Objectives Malignant tumors of the pancreatic head can rise from different entities. Most of the patients suffer from pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), while distal bile duct cancer (dCCC) or ampullary cancer (AmpC) is less common. For a curative approach, the treatment of choice is a PD. This procedure - even when performed at specialized centers - is still associated with a significant burden of morbidity and mortality. Due to subtle differences in localization and tumor biology of the underling entities, the aim of the study was to compare postoperative outcome and long-term survival after PD in those patients.
