Autologous Islet transplantation and pancreas resection for complex pancreatic trauma-is there a role for remote processing?

Objectives Autologous islet transplantation (AIT) after pancreatic resection can be performed for indications other than chronic pancreatitis. Complex pancreatic trauma refractory to endoscopic and conservative treatment often necessitates major resection, with a risk of post-operative glucose intolerance. The use of AIT in this setting poses unique challenges such as the need to isolate islets on an urgent basis and has not been widely reported. The aim of this study was to explore the role of remote processing of autologous islets for complex pancreatic trauma.
