Which patient and doctor behaviours make a medical consultation more effective from a patient point of view. Results from a European multicentre study in 31 countries

Primary care consultation deserves to be considered a “meeting between experts” [1], where the doctor’s and patient’s perspectives should be synergistically balanced and integrated [2]. In this view, the effectiveness of the medical encounter relies on the shared responsibility that both parties assume for making the communication fruitful. Pat ients, who were asked to express their opinion on reciprocal duties in the consultation, indicated that it was equally important for doctors as well as patients to communicate honestly, to be open about treatment and information, and to manage time effectively [3].
