Although often slow to adapt, higher education and health care have not been spared the upheaval currently confronting traditional institutions. These vast transformations in how we live have also impacted how we professionally associate with one another. Once an expected part of professional life, the role of membership in an association of your peers is now often perceived as extraneous. I recall when I was in my first nursing education program that the importance of belonging to a professional organization was stressed as being part of the role of a registered nurse.
