When Something is Better than Nothing: Response to Tully and Cosh

Tully and Cosh [1] recognize the need to provide effective treatment for anxiety in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). We agree. However, in our systematic review of the literature, we were struck by the paucity of quality research on the treatment of anxiety in CHD populations. Indeed, our ongoing randomized clinical trial (RCT) of exercise and anxiolytic medication in anxious CHD patients, known as the UNWIND study, represents one of the few trials targeting this patient group [2]. In contrast, depression has been widely studied in CHD populations, and a has been recognized as a risk factor [3] and treatment target in a number of RCTs [4 –6].
