Mortality and causes of death among people who inject amphetamine: a long-term follow-up cohort study from a needle exchange program in Sweden

Abuse of amphetamine and amphetamine-type central nervous system (CNS) stimulants like methamphetamine, is a worldwide problem. The global number of amphetamine users is estimated to around 34 million, and amphetamines comprise the second most common group of illicit drugs after cannabis (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, 2015). In Sweden, amphetamine is the most commonly used substance among people who inject drugs (PWID) (The Swedish Council for Information on Alcohol and Other Drugs, 2014).
