Renal involvement in fatal cases of chikungunya virus infection
Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) was first isolated in Tanzania (then Tanganyika) in 1953, when it was identified as the agent responsible for an outbreak of febrile disease on a Makonde Plateau [1]. To date, CHIKV infection has been documented in Africa, several islands in the Indian Ocean, Asia and recently in the Americas, including United States. In addition, there have been outbreaks and imported cases in several European countries [2,3].
