Lipid profile associated with the systemic inflammatory response syndrome and sepsis in critically ill patients

• Low HDL, TC and LDL concentrations occurred in SIRS and/or sepsis;• Hypertriglyceridemia was associated with episodes of inflammation and infection;• In sepsis occurs changes in lipoprotein composition, mainly HDL, triglycerides and VLD;• Reduction in TC and lipoprotein were proportional t o the degree of inflammation;• Lipoproteins may function as potential biomarkers (HDL) in SIRS and sepsis.
