Cell death mechanisms in Leishmania amazonensis triggered by methylene blue-mediated antiparasitic photodynamic therapy

Leishmaniasis is an infectious disease caused by species of protozoa of the Leishmania genus that is transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies. Despite the variety of clinical manifestations, the most common form is cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) following visceral leishmaniasis and mucosal leishmaniasis. Nowadays, leishmaniasis is endemic in at least 97 nations and territories, and there are over one million cases per year. More than 87% of the cases are reported in Africa, Middle West and Latin America, mainly in Brazil.
