Imprisoned paternity: a systematic review of paternity in the prison context

This study aimed to perform a systematic review of the literature on fatherhood in the prison context in order to identify the international panorama of publications on the subject. From the search in international databases of articles published in full between 2005 and 2016, it was identified the coexistence studies which understand fatherhood in a traditional way, based primarily on the ability to be a provider, as well as studies which, supported by a gender approach, sought to question the socially determined positions of the father in the family. Considering the limitations imposed by stereotyped models and considering that prisons reproduce gender inequalities imposed by the wider society, it was pointed out that the stimulating experience of a more affective and caregiving fatherhood might produce changes not only within the prison context, but also in the world outside bars.
