The relationship between lifestyle factors and clinical symptoms of bipolar disorder patients in a Chinese population

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe and recurrent psychiatric illness associated with substantial functional impairments and premature mortality (Belmaker, 2004). Globally, the overall point-prevalence of BD is estimated to be 0.741% (Ferrari et al., 2011) and BD accounts for nearly 1,320,000 excess deaths each year (Patel et al., 2016). Data from a nationally representative survey in the U.S. demonstrated that the BD affected approximately 4.4% of people in United States (Merikangas et al., 2007) and incurred disproportionately higher costs for both patients and the mental health care system than most other mental illnesses do (Kessler et al., 2012).In China, the estimated point, 12-month and lifetime prevalence of BD in  China was 0.09% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.06-0.12%), 0.17% (95% CI: 0.10-0.29%) and 0.11% (95% CI: 0.07-0.17%), respectively (Zhang et al., 2017).
