Discussion Boards in the Face-to-Face Classroom, Laboratory, and Clinical

The discussion board (DB), or forum, is a tool that is found in most online learning management systems (LMSs). This tool allows people to have discussions even when they are not online or physically present at the same time (Wang& Woo, 2007). Being able to have these discussions without being online at the same time is known as asynchronous. In contrast, if two people are having a discussion in real time, whether in-person or online, that is known as synchronous discussion. The focus of this article will be the online asynchronous DB in the face-to-face classroom, laboratory, and clinical setting.
