How to choose among the multiple options to enhance the penetration of topically applied methyl aminolevulinate prior to photodynamic therapy

I have read with interest the paper by Osman-Ponchet et al. [1] comparing the in vitro penetration of methyl aminolevulinate (MAL) into ex vivo human skin pre-treated with an abrasive pad or a microneedling device. The authors have found that abrasion with skin preparation pad is superior to microneedling for increasing MAL penetration in ex vivo human skin. These observations seem to lead to the conclusion that skin should be pre-treated prior to MAL photodynamic therapy (PDT) with an abrasive pad instead of a microneedling device.
