Effects of PACT using phenothiazine-derived drugs and red light on the macrophage x S. aureus interface

Macrophages and neutrophils are the main cells involved in phagocytosis [1]. Pathogen internalization can occur basically in two ways: active (phagocytosis) and passive. Passive pathogen internalization is characterized by cell invasion and phagocytosis is associated with the depletion of infectious processes [1,2]. During infectious inflammatory processes, the major molecules produced by the phagocytes of the immune system are free radicals, this event is known as “oxidative burst”. These molecules act unspecifically by de-structuring the pathogen or even by unbalancing metabolic pathways [1–3].
