Chlorin Nanoparticles for Tissue Diagnostics and Photodynamic Therapy

The Chlorin compound Temoporfin, mTHPC (meta-tetrahydroxyphenylchlorin), is a potent photosensitizer used in the product Foscan ® (Biolitec, Jena) and also in the liposomal formulation Foslip. Foscan® as molecular solution is approved in Europe for photodynamic therapy of head and neck cancer. However, instead of using formulations to make mTHPC soluble for systemic applications, the idea arose to study nanoparticles produ ced from the insoluble raw material mTHPC. It is evident that mTHPC-derived nanoparticles are not fluorescent because of the crystalline structure of such flat molecules [1].
