Human papillomaviruses (HPV) are the most common sexually-transmitted virus, and are responsible for diseases such as non-oncologic condyloma acuminatum. Carcinogenic HPV strains, are reported to be responsible for virtually all cases of cervical cancer and its precursor, the cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), due to the tropism of this virus for the squamocolumnar junction.
