Bioactive dental materials —Do they exist and what does bioactivity mean?

Successful dental restorative and prosthetic treatment outcomes require interfacial adhesion of materials to under-laying dental hard tissues sufficient to withstand external occlusal loads. Interfacial adhesion is normally achieved using resin based adhesives and priming compounds whereas the integrity of natural interphases of hard tissues are achieved via a mainly mineralized constitution. Dental hard tissues of dentin, enamel and cementum incorporate calcium phosphate minerals of carbonated hydroxyl apatite and the interface between the tissues are also typically toughened via collagen fibrils.
