Why do doctors not learn how to explain “medically unexplained symptoms”?

Physical symptoms not readily understood as “organic” are quite common among patients in many subfields of healthcare and may represent a reason for as many as 25–50% of all visits to general practitioners [1]. Such symptoms are often referred to as “medically unexplained symptoms” [2] or “functional somatic syndromes” [3]. Thes e symptoms represent a challenge for health care practitioners in many different ways. Communication between doctors and patients with subjective symptoms without a well-defined organic explanation is often difficult.
