Functional treatment for acute ankle sprains: Softcast wrap versus MOK-cast. A prospective randomized single-center trial

Acute lateral ankle sprains are the single most common sports injury accounting for 2 –6% of overall emergency department presentations [1,2]. Roughly half of all acute ankle sprains are due to exercise and they account for 19–23% of all sports injuries [2]. Approximately 600,000 acute ankle sprains occur in the Netherlands every year [3]. The estimated total annual cost to socie ty adds up to 600 million Euro in the Netherlands alone [1].
