Gastrocnemius tightness: A population based observational study

Whilst it has been suggested that gastrocnemius tightness (GT) is one of the most common causes of restriction in ankle dorsiflexion [1], no large study has been performed to assess the prevalence of GT in the general population. It has been proposed that an isolated gastrocnemius equinus deformity leads to excessive pressure and overload throughout the foot thereby causing pain and deformity [2]. GT has therefore been shown to be associated with multiple musculoskeletal pathologies such as metatarsalgia, plantar fasciitis, achilles tendinopathy, hallux valgus [3 –6], knee pain [7,8] and back pain [9].
