• Preperitoneal fat independently determine insulin resistance and low HDL-C in Singaporean men.• Subcutaneous fat was a determinant of insulin resistance, elevated TG and low HDL-C in women.• Fat measurement by ultrasound have the potential to differentiate individuals at risk for CVD.
