Recently, examination of the role of sedentary time in the development and consequences of cardiovascular disease has gained popularity,1 yet there remain significant gaps in our understanding of the unique contributions of sedentary time, independent of exercise and physical activity. Sedentary behavior, frequently assessed through self-reported measures of screen time or objectively measured through the use of activity monitors, is defined as any waking behavior characterized by an energy expenditure ≤1.5 metabolic equivalents which is done while in a sitting, reclining, or lying position.
