The inclusion of retracted studies in systematic reviews: A response to Gray et al. (2018)

I read with interest a recent letter in your journal by Gray et al. (2018) regarding the inclusion of retracted studies in systematic reviews (SR), focusing on nursing literature. They found that 37 nursing SR contained a citation to a retracted publication, of which only 23 were studies included in the SR as opposed to references in the background or discussion. Of interest, they found that five SR that included a retracted study were published in a year subsequent to the year of retraction. However, the numbers are very small, and any claims at generalizability would appear far-fetched.
