Brexit: A response to McCrae (2018)

In his defence of Brexit, Dr McCrae makes numerous statements that cannot go unchallenged (Mccrae, 2018). He begins with an upbeat assessment of the UK that will be unrecognisable to many informed observers elsewhere. The latest OECD Economic Outlook reports that, in 2017, the UK ties with Japan in having the lowest rate of economic growth of any major economy (OECD, 2017). Employment may be high but real wages are at the same level as in May 2006 (Office of National Statistics, 2017). Manufacturing, which now accounts for only 10% of the British economy, and tourism, have increased, but only because of the collapse in the value of the pound, hardly a success (Jackson, 2017).
