Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing in the 21st century: It ’s ‘Déjà vu’ all over again!

With apologies to Yogi Berra, following recent visits to mental health care units in the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (USA), we were left ‘scratching our heads’ and wondering ‘Is this Déjà vu all over again?’ We both worked in various inpatient mental health units from the mid/late 1970s through the 2000s and these recent visits were both disconcerting and eerily familiar. Mental health care in both the UK and the USA, if th e policy literature is accurate, has purportedly undergone a number of significant and wide-reaching improvements and developments during these decades.
