Zika and travel: Public health implications and communications for blood donors, sperm donors and pregnant women

We are a group of medical students working on a project that examines the public health implications of Zika virus infection acquired during travel. The recent article from Grischott et al. [1] in Travel Medicine and Infectious Disease reviews non-mosquito borne Zika virus (ZIKV) infection, highlights the paradigm shift of this infection from mosquito borne to a multi-mode transmission virus. This situation prompted us to go further to examine Zika “dilemmas” for returning travellers and to evaluate how public health authorities provide information to lay persons with respect to these dilemmas.
