Editorial overview: Emerging importance of social media for real-time communication in the modern medical era

Data from the Pew Research Center, approximately 70% of Americans are using social media platforms for connection and communication [1,2]. Remarkably, in 2005, at the time this information was first collected, only 5% of Americans were engaging in social media [1]. Additionally, it is becoming increasingly clear that communication via the Internet and social media are mainstays of of the modern medical era, both in clinical practice [3] and for the conduction and reporting of academic medical research [4,5].
