Increased urinary albumin excretion in children with type 1 diabetes: is it a reason for concern?

Numerous studies have reported on the prevalence of microalbuminuria among children with type 1 diabetes,1 –6 suggesting that the rates of persistent microalbuminuria range from 4.4% to 8.6% with 5–6 years of diabetes duration. However, investigations on incidence rates, especially for persistent microalbuminuria, are less common. In the current issue of the Journal of Diabetes and Its Complication s, Dr. d'Annunzio and colleagues sought to determine the incidence of persistently increased albuminuria in a clinic-based pediatric cohort of type 1 diabetes followed prospectively from diagnosis.
