Co-occurrence of mcr-1, mcr-4 and mcr-5 genes in multidrug-resistant ST10 Enterotoxigenic and Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli in Spain (2006-2017)

Pathogenic Escherichia coli is recognized as the main causing agent of colibacillosis in swine, mainly associated with Enterotoxigenic and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (ETEC and STEC) pathotypes that are characterized by the production of specific virulence factors [1]. Neonatal and post-weaning diarrhoea (PWD) diseases caused by these pathotypes constitute one of the most important causes of economic losses in pig industry worldwide due to decrease weight, mortality and the expensive control measures [2].
