Literature contradictions about the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and the existence of “diabetes paradox”in patients with takotsubo syndrome

A recent paper reported on the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) (21.1%, and “slightly higher than the expected sex and age-adjusted rates in the general population of the participating countries, Italy and Germany”) in patients with takotsubo syndrome (TTS), based on 826 patients from the International Multicenter GEIST Registry’s database [1]. This finding stands in stark contrast to the 10.2% prevalence of DM found among 1,085 patients from the international literature of individually reported patients with TTS of a mean age of 61.7 years old [2] (younger than the authors’ cohort with a mean age of 72 years old) [1].
