Analysis of the DNA methylation profiles of miR-9-3, miR-34a, and miR-137 promoters in patients with diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy

Diabetes mellitus is a severe chronic illness caused by defects in insulin production, secretion, and signaling. Insulin resistance and decreased sensitivity are pathological conditions of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The clinical progression of poorly controlled diabetes may result in chronic microvascular complications such as retinopathy and nephropathy. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the major cause of blindness in adults, and diabetic nephropathy (DN) has become the leading cause of chronic end- stage renal failure.
