HIV-1 non-R5 tropism correlates with a larger size of the cellular viral reservoir and a detectable residual viremia in patients under suppressive ART

The entry of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) into target cells requires the use of at least one of two distinct surface chemokine co-receptors, CCR5 (R5) or CXCR4 (X4). Viruses may use R5 (R5-tropic viruses) or X4 (X4-tropic) individually or use both R5 and X4 (dual or mixed-tropic virus) [1 –3].
