Alcohol abuse increases the level of Ang II, which in turn upregulates the expression of LTCC in the myocardium, and then transports more non‐transferrin‐bound‐iron into the cardiomyocytes, aggravating oxidative damage resulting from iron overload. Ang II/LTCC‐mediated iron overload and alcoholic myocardiopathy is blocked by naturally occurring quercetin in various foods, including pomegranate (Punica granatum).
