The 2017 ACC/AHA blood pressure guideline lowers the threshold used to define hypertension to a systolic blood pressure of 130  mm Hg or higher or a diastolic pressure of 80 mm Hg or higher.1 In addition, the new guideline lowers the systolic blood pressure level that qualifies for treatment for many adults. A consequence of the lowered thresholds for defining and treating hypertension is a sharp increase in the number of people with hypertension in the U.S. and the number who qualify for drug treatment.
