A Randomized Trial of a Short 34-Gauge Needle for Intravitreal Injections

Intravitreal injections of anti –vascular endothelial growth factor agents have achieved excellent results1,2 and have become one of the most frequently performed intraocular procedures. Although intravitreal drug delivery of anti–vascular endothelial growth factor agents is effective, patients often report discomfort during t he procedure. A literature review in a previous study of the use of a 33-gauge needle for intravitreal injections3 indicated that there is no consensus regarding the effect of the intravitreal needle size and perceived pain.
