Issue Information

Autologous bone grafting is often used to treat bone defects; however, a limited supply of bone grafts, long complicated surgical procedures, and concomitant complications have prompted scientists to find alternatives. Dmitri Ossipov et al. report the preparation and in vitro degradation of two types of disulfide cross‐linked hyaluronan hydrogels, with and without bisphosphonate conjugated to the polysaccharide, as a potential scaffold for bone tissue engineering. The relationship between hydrogel degradability and capacity for in situ biomineralization is discussed and they show that the expected degradation products are well‐tolerated by C2C12 cells.
