8q24/MYC rearrangement is a recurrent cytogenetic abnormality in blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasms

MYC encodes a transcription factor that plays a crucial rule in multiple cellular processes of cellular growth, proliferation and metabolism. This proto-oncogene is involved in transformation and cell proliferation via activation of the cyclin D2 promoter [1], but also induces apoptosis through the nuclear respiratory factor (NRF-1) [2] and the Arf-p53 pathway [3]. MYC is frequently dysregulated in multiple hematologic and non-hematologic malignancies. Chromosome 8q24/MYC translocation represents a prototype for oncogene activation.
