Newman-Casey et  al (p. 332) examined eye care providers' Medicare prescribing patterns for ophthalmic medications and estimate the potential cost savings to Medicare from generic or therapeutic drug substitutions and from negotiating drug prices. In a retrospective cross-sectional study, they analyzed the publicl y available Medicare Part D 2013 Prescriber Public Use File and the Summary file to calculate medication costs by physician specialty and drug. Eye care providers accounted for ∼2.3% of all Medicare Part D payments, or $2.4 billion.
