Cell type specific tracing of the subcortical input to primary visual cortex from the basal forebrain

This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. The basal forebrain provides a modulatory cholinergic input to cerebral cortex through volume transmission which allows access to receptors throughout all cortical layers. Direct synaptic inputs are also present in deep layers. The paper used a dual viral retrograde tracing technique to show that basal forebrain inputs synapse directly onto inhibitory, but not excitatory neurons in primary visual cortex (V1), suggesting a more immediate modulatory role on local inhibition.
