Choosing Wisely

More care is not always better care. Choosing Wisely is an initiative of the ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine) Foundation that seeks to advance a national dialogue on avoiding unnecessary medical tests, treatments and procedures. The Choosing Wisely campaign aims to help patients and doctors talk about what’s truly needed. The ABIM Foundation has joined with more than 70 medical specialty societies to develop evidence-based lists of tests and procedures that should be questioned. Many  tests and treatments turn out to be frequently unnecessary, duplicative or even harmful. for patients. It means their time, energy and money could have been focused on smarter, safer, and more effective care. The Choosing Wisely campaign aims to help patients and doctors talk about what’s truly needed. To help patients engage their health care provider in these conversations and empower them to ask questions about what tests and procedures are right for them, Consumer Reports developed patient-friendly materials based on the specialty societies’ lists of recommendations of tests and treatments that may be unnecessary. Various topics including dental treatment, genetic testing, antibiotic usage and more are provided to help patients and health care consumers engage in their health and help guide them in in making smart and informed decisions with the guidance of their health care providers.
