Neuroanatomical details of the lateral neurons of Drosophila melanogaster support their functional role in the circadian system

By applying the multicolor‐labeling technique Flybow we identified the anatomical similarity of the E2 subunit of the evening oscillator of Drosophila's clock, which is built by the 5th small ventrolateral neuron and one ITP positive dorsolateral neuron. These clock neurons share spatio‐functional properties. Another finding addresses the large lateral PDF‐neurons. While three neurons reflect the branching pattern by PDF immunohistochemistry, one neuron per hemisphere is restricted only to the proximal part of the medulla‐surface.
