Diabetes status is linked to low health literacy: Implications for health system

Numerous clinic- based studies over the last 25  years have found an association between health literacy and patients' diabetes knowledge, distress, self- confidence, self- management behavior, glycemic control and health outcomes.1–8 In this issue of the Journal of Diabetes and Its Complications, Dr. Quartuccio and colleagues sought to deter mine if lower health literacy was associated with diabetes and/or hyperglycemia in older adults and if this relationship differed by sex.9 The study is unique in that it across sectional analysis from the Health Aging and Body Composition (ABC) study, a 20-year longitudinal cohort project of over 25 00 ethnically diverse older adults.
