QT-prolongation in type 1 diabetes is augmented during bradycardia

Background: Sudden unexplained death in the young has been described in type-1 diabetes (T1DM), and QT-prolongation has been suggested as the underlying mechanism. The syndrome has been termed the “dead-in-bed syndrome” since patients most often are found dead after a period of undisturbed rest. We investigated differences in the QT-interval in ambulatory T1DM patients without known heart disease compared to age- and sex-matched controls.
